Russell Johnson
Russell Johnson, 38, died on July 6, 2019, in his solitary confinement cell at the Coffield Unit, a Texas state prison in Anderson County. His sister, Tambra Marsh, said he had a hard early life, losing his father at age 6, and that he had planned to adopt an older shelter dog after his release because no animal should die alone in a cage. Marsh said she had repeatedly asked prison officials to move him out of isolation after seeing his mental state deteriorate, and that he was not moved. A prison report cited by The Texas Observer states that guards found him bleeding from a self-inflicted neck wound. The Texas Attorney General's custodial death report lists the death at Coffield Unit on that date.
