Rudy Garza
Rudy Garza died on August 1, 2021, while held at the California Health Care Facility in Stockton, where he had been moved for a bacterial infection and later treated for cancer and hepatitis C. He had been deemed terminally ill and qualified for compassionate release, but died before the release could take effect. His wife, Lorene Garza, says he did not receive adequate medical care there, that the facility did not tell her he was dying, and that staff turned her away when she tried to see him in his final days. Lorene also said he had told her she would be able to sit with him before he died, and she described the loss of that chance: "I never got to say goodbye."
