Rubin Withers
Rubin Withers, a Black man, was held in the jail at Andalusia, Alabama, when a mob took him from it on October 4, 1910. The Richmond Virginian reported that jailers first held the crowd back, then handed him over after threats from some of his relatives and friends, and that he was tied to a stake and burned. The Washington Times reported that a mob of about 40 men chained him to an iron stake and set oil-soaked wood around him, and said the sheriff's office was unaware of the mob until he was already in its hands. The Bluefield Evening Leader put the size of the crowd at about 400 men.
