Ross

died August 6, 1886 · Sebastian County, Arkansas

The Memphis Appeal reported that Ross, whom it described as a quarter-blood Cherokee, was hanged at Fort Smith, Arkansas, on August 6, 1886. According to the paper, Father Smythe baptized him the day before, he ate a hearty breakfast, and he spoke pleasantly with an Associated Press reporter, remaining composed while the rope was adjusted. President Cleveland had granted a two-week reprieve for a review of his case, and the paper reported that the review ended without further intervention and the execution went ahead. The paper said the death warrant was read to him in his cell, that his neck broke in the fall, and that he died without a struggle.
