Rosa Carson
Rosa Carson was held at the jail at Elloree, near Orangeburg, South Carolina, when a mob broke in, battered the door and took her out. Several July 1914 newspaper accounts say the mob hanged her from a tree on Sunday, July 12, and shot her body many times. One report says her sister, held in the same jail, was also taken by the mob and later released. Eyewitnesses told one paper that many prominent citizens took part, and the accounts differ on some details of the place and date.
