Died in jail or a lockup
Roper Morrall
Ralph Morrall was held in the Barnwell jail in South Carolina. Early on Saturday, December 28, 1889, a masked mob took him and seven other men from the jail and shot them to death outside the town. According to jailer Neville, the mob took his keys, threatened to shoot him and break the gate open, and forced him to open the cells. Other newspaper accounts say the men were tied to trees before being shot, and a Barnwell citizens' committee publicly defended the killings.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody
