Roosevelt Grigsby
Roosevelt Grigsby, a 20-year-old Black man, was being held at the sheriff's office in Charleston, Missouri, on December 18, 1924. The El Dorado Daily News reports that a mob of more than 200 men overpowered Sheriff B. B. Jackson and his deputies, took Grigsby from the building and hanged him from a tree within 50 feet of it. Officers said the mob grew out of racial tension in the town that had built since an attack the previous October. Grigsby protested his innocence as he was taken. A second account says the mob also shot his body and burned it.
