Died in jail or a lockup
Roosevelt Grigsby
Roosevelt Grigsby, a 20-year-old Black man, was held in the jail at Charleston, Minnesota, in December 1924. The Seward Daily Gateway reported that a mob of more than 2,000 people came to the jail, overpowered the sheriff in his office and took the jail keys. The mob removed him from the jail, hanged him in the courthouse yard, shot his body, dragged it behind an automobile, hanged it again in front of a Black-owned grocery and then burned it. The account is from a single 1924 newspaper report.
