Ronald Gene Ingram
Ronald Gene Ingram, 60, was a man with schizophrenia, according to the Tampa Bay Times, and was being moved from the mental health unit at Dade Correctional Institution in Miami-Dade County to a North Florida prison that was meant to give him better mental health care. He died on February 14, 2022, and was found dead on a bench in a transport van during a stop in Ocala. State investigators say correctional officers beat him after he was handcuffed, and the medical examiner found a punctured lung that led to internal bleeding. Several officers have since been charged, and one, Ronald Connor, was acquitted of most charges while his lawyers say he was only helping Ingram to his feet. His family's law firm said it planned to sue the state.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff (disputed). The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and prosecutors say correctional officers beat Ronald Gene Ingram after he was handcuffed, and the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide from a punctured lung and internal bleeding; one officer's attorneys dispute that the officers caused serious injury, and the fourth officer, Ronald Connor, says he was only helping Ingram to his feet.
Reported by: Florida Department of Law Enforcement (outside investigators); Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office; Miami-Dade medical examiner (medical examiner or coroner); Leesburg Medical Examiner (medical examiner or coroner); Florida Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); officers' attorneys (family or their lawyers).
