Ron Lafferty
Ron Lafferty, 78, died on November 11, 2019, at the Utah State Prison in Draper, where he had been held on death row for more than three decades. The Utah Department of Corrections said he died of natural causes, and KSL reported that the prison said he had apparently been ill for some time and had recently been moved to the Wasatch facility, which houses the infirmary. His attorney, Therese Day, said he had a serious mental illness that was not properly treated and that the illness left him unable to help his lawyers. He had chosen execution by firing squad, and his appeals were nearing an end, though reports differed on how close an execution date was when he died.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). The Utah Department of Corrections said he died of natural causes, but his attorney said he had a serious mental illness that was not properly treated.
Reported by: Utah Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); his attorney.
