Roderick Hayes
Roderick Hayes, 29, died in May 2024 at Augusta State Medical Prison in Georgia, where he was held. The Georgia Department of Corrections said his death resulted from an altercation, and the medical examiner has not yet determined the official cause. Arrest warrants allege that a correctional officer let Hayes and two other men into another man's cell, where Hayes was stabbed, and the account from that cell's occupant is that he acted in self-defense. The officer was fired and, with the two other men, faces criminal proceedings, and the Augusta Press reported that a camera system at the facility has reportedly not worked for years.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). Arrest warrants say a correctional officer let two other inmates into a cell to attack another man, who stabbed Hayes, and the Georgia Department of Corrections says the officer failed to follow policies and procedures.
Reported by: Georgia Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); arrest warrants.
