Roberto Vargas
Roberto Vargas was 59 and was held at the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Tutwiler, Mississippi, under a contract with the Vermont Department of Corrections. He was found unresponsive in his cell on December 13, 2020, and was pronounced dead at about 11:10 a.m. The Vermont Department of Corrections said the death did not appear suspicious or related to COVID-19 and opened an internal review. Vermont Defender General Matthew Valerio said the death was unexpected, since no preexisting medical conditions were known that could have caused it. The Prisoners' Rights Office said it would also investigate, and the cause of death had not yet been determined.
