Robert Worthington walked into the Russell County Jail on his own on January 11, 2021, and a jail psychiatrist found that he was not at risk of suicide. At 6:50 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, he was found hanging in his cell, about 20 minutes after he had told staff he was okay. The sheriff's office and the state law enforcement agency investigated his death.
