Robert Swayzee
Robert Swayze was held at the jail in Yazoo City, Mississippi, on the evening of December 29, 1883, when an armed mob came to the building and took him from his cell. The Indianapolis Journal reported that the jailer handed over the keys and was sent home before about 200 people entered, and that Robert was hanged over a fence after a rope was put around his neck. Another account, reprinted in the Daily Dispatch, says a crowd took him from his cell and lynched him. The reports do not agree on whether the jail staff resisted.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A Yazoo City correspondent of The Indianapolis Journal reported that a mob of about 200 entered the jail after the jailer handed over the keys, took Robert Swayzee from his cell and hanged him over a fence.
