Robert Munger

70 years old · died June 12, 2020 · Airway Heights Corrections Center, Spokane County, Washington

Robert Munger, 70, was held at Airway Heights Corrections Center in Spokane County, Washington, when he was attacked in June 2020. Court records and a Washington State Patrol investigation report that his cellmate beat him and that he died of a fractured skull on June 5, 2020, after being taken to a hospital, and the cellmate later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. The cellmate says he asked staff for a new cellmate and that a call button got no response, while the Department of Corrections says its protocols were followed and an independent review found that screeners did not know the two men were connected. The State Patrol investigation said screening protocols were followed, and the cellmate's claim that corrections officers set him up was not supported by that report.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). The Washington State Patrol investigation and the prosecutor say his cellmate, Shane Goldsby, beat him to death, and Goldsby pleaded guilty to second-degree murder; the cellmate says he asked staff for a new cellmate and got no response from a call button, while the Department of Corrections says screening protocols were followed and found screeners did not know the two men were connected.

Reported by: Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); Washington State Patrol (outside investigators); Cowlitz County Prosecutor (outside investigators); Spokesman-Review and KHQ reporting (reporters); court documents obtained by KHQ (court).
