Robert Gay
Robert Gay, a 27-year-old man and unmarried, was a member of a 71st Indiana company. He was held in the Indianapolis jail, where his conduct was described as unexceptionable, and on the day of his execution he addressed the people held there, urging them toward a better life. On Friday, March 27, 1863, a firing party of twenty soldiers shot him under a military order issued by General Wright at Cincinnati, according to the Indianapolis Journal, and the article says he was calm and spoke his last words without visible fear. The paper reported threats of a rescue attempt and said the execution was moved earlier in the day to limit crowds.
