Robert Bruce was hanged on December 8, 1854, at the gallows in Sonora, Tuolumne County, California, in a public execution that drew a large crowd, according to the Columbia Gazette. The paper reported that he was taken from the jail to the platform, where he declared his innocence before the sentence was carried out. His body was cut down after 37 minutes and buried.
