Ricky DeAngelo Hinkle
Ricky DeAngelo Hinkle was 47 years old, a father whose son, Nyreekis Hunter, went to court on his behalf. He had been held in the Jefferson County Jail for several days, and his family's attorney says he was denied his medications and treatment for alcohol withdrawal. On September 13, 2014, as he was being moved to a monitored cell, a deputy used a Taser on him twice, and he became unresponsive and died. The coroner ruled his death a homicide, and in 2019 a federal appeals court found that the second shock was clearly excessive force.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff (disputed; neglect alleged). The coroner ruled the death a homicide after deputies Tased him, while his family's lawsuit says jail staff also denied him medication and treatment for alcohol withdrawal.
Reported by: Jefferson County Coroner (medical examiner or coroner); Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); his family's lawsuit (family or their lawyers); 11th Circuit Court of Appeals (court).
Lawsuit: The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in 2019 that a second Taser shock to Ricky Hinkle was clearly excessive force, and the sources report no settlement or award amount.
