Richmond was being brought to Chetopa, Kansas, in the custody of officers from Vineta when a mob took him from them on arrival, on September 5, 1878. According to an unnamed correspondent's dispatch in The Emporia News, the mob carried him to an old bridge southwest of town and hanged him there. The dispatch gives no first name or age for him.
