Richard Whitley

Richard Lee Whitley was executed in the electric chair in Virginia on July 6, 1987, after losing an attempt for a stay of execution in two courts in Richmond. A 2023 NPR account reports that staff recorded the execution, and that the tape shows workers unsure how the recording was supposed to be made.
