Richard Lambert
Richard Lambert, 31, of Moses Lake, died at the Grant County Jail in Ephrata on December 31, 2024. Corrections deputies said they found him unresponsive in his dormitory bed after he did not come to breakfast, and emergency responders declared him dead. The coroner later found that sepsis from peritonitis, caused by internal injuries from a bicycle crash before his arrest, led to his death, and the Washington Attorney General's Office ruled it accidental and declined criminal charges against jail staff. A separate administrative review of jail procedures and the investigation by the Central Basin Investigative Team were reported as still pending in some accounts.
Cause of death, as reported: Died in an accident. The Grant County Coroner ruled that internal injuries from a bicycle crash before his arrest led to peritonitis and then fatal sepsis, and ruled the death an accident.
Reported by: Grant County Coroner (medical examiner or coroner); Washington State Attorney General's Office (outside investigators); Central Basin Investigative Team (outside investigators); Grant County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him).
