Richard Gibbs
Richard Gubbs was one of four Black men held in the jail at Yazoo City, Mississippi. On the evening of December 29, 1883, a mob that had taken the keys from the jailer could not open his cell door, according to the Indianapolis Journal. The paper reports that Gubbs came to the grating, was shot, and was then dragged from the building and hanged from the outside of it. A Yazoo City report carried by the Daily Dispatch says an armed crowd took him from the jail and lynched him on the same evening.
