Richard Charles Johnson was executed by lethal injection at Broad River Correctional Facility in Columbia, South Carolina, on the evening of May 3, 2002, where he was held. His sister, Lori Crawford, said he had been very strong and had a lot of faith, and before the execution he and his brother John, who witnessed it, said "I love you" and "See you later" to each other. The United States Supreme Court and the South Carolina Supreme Court declined to halt the execution, and the governor denied clemency the day before. His brother-in-law called the execution a tragedy.
