Rich Allen

died June 29, 1905 · Oconee County Jail, Oconee County, Georgia

Rich Allen was held at the Watkinsville jail in Georgia in June 1905. Newspaper accounts say a masked mob took him from the jail in the early morning of June 28 or 29, along with eight others, and tied him by the neck to a fence post about 100 yards away. The Birmingham Age-Herald reported that he was shot to death, and Governor Joseph M. Terrell's account gives the same cause. The Courier-Journal reported that the town marshal refused to hand over the jail key and was then forced to give it up, and that one other man survived after being left for dead.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched

Reported by: Birmingham Age-Herald (reporters); Governor Joseph M. Terrell.
