Reyes Antonio Chaires Jr.

44 years old · died June 6, 2026 · Bexar County Adult Detention Center, Bexar County, Texas

Reyes Antonio Chaires Jr., 44, died in June 2026 at a San Antonio hospital while in the custody of the Bexar County jail, after being taken there by ambulance and admitted the Thursday before his death. The Bexar County Sheriff's Office said detoxing may have contributed to his death, and the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause. Castle Hills Police Department is leading the investigation and the sheriff's internal affairs unit is conducting a separate administrative review. Lydia Leos, a mother who has spoken publicly about her son's death, and advocates with the Texas Jail Project have said the death followed a failure of detox protocols and that the county has not taken accountability.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (disputed; neglect alleged). Krish Kundu of the Texas Jail Project says a complete failure of detox protocols caused the death, while his mother, Lydia Leos, says he died of an overdose after guards failed to search him thoroughly.

Reported by: Krish Kundu, co-founder of the Texas Jail Project (advocates); Lydia Leos, his mother (family or their lawyers).
