Died in jail or a lockup
Rebecca Powell
Rebecca Powell, 63, of South Bend, was found unresponsive and not breathing in a cell in the medical unit of the St. Joseph County Jail on the morning of February 21, 2022. Jail staff and South Bend Fire Department medics tried to save her, but she was pronounced dead. The sheriff's department and Indiana State Police said the cause was not yet disclosed, and state police are investigating because she died while in the jail's custody. An autopsy was scheduled for later that week.
