Raul Ortega, 25, had been held at U.S. Penitentiary Atwater in Atwater, California, since October 2017. On the evening of July 29, 2018, prison staff found him unresponsive. He was pronounced dead around 10 p.m. at a hospital. Prison officials said his death is believed to be a suicide.
