Randy Gallmeyer

46 years old · died October 22, 2007 · Ramsey County Jail, Ramsey County, Minnesota

Randy Gallmeyer, a 46-year-old man with diabetes, was held at the Ramsey County jail in October 2007. His mother came to the jail to drop off his insulin and asked to speak with a nurse, but none was on duty at that hour, according to the sheriff's office findings. The sheriff's office investigation found that public health nurses at the jail did not offer him as many blood-sugar tests as required, and Sheriff Bob Fletcher said his death likely could have been avoided. St. Paul police were asked to look into whether there was negligence or criminal conduct, and the family's attorney has said they plan to file a wrongful death lawsuit.
