Randall Jordan-Aparo
Randall Jordan-Aparo, 27, was held at Franklin Correctional Institution in Florida in September 2010. His brother Shawn described the hardship they faced growing up in foster care, and their plans for a new life together, and said Randall was like a father figure to him. Randall had complained of serious medical symptoms and asked for a hospital, and his family says officers gassed him with pepper spray and tear gas before he was found dead about five hours later. The medical examiner, Dr. Lisa Flanagan, attributed his death to complications of cardiac and pulmonary abscesses, while inspectors and outside experts argue the gassing and delayed medical care contributed, and the family's federal wrongful death lawsuit alleges guards covered up what happened; the case has been reopened.
