Randall Johnson
Randall Johnson, a 56-year-old painter, died on August 16, 2018, while held at the Shasta County Jail in Redding, California. His family says he was taken there after police found him in distress outside his home, and that jail staff failed to summon emergency care and left him in a safety cell without the required checks. The Shasta County coroner ruled the death a suicide and attributed it to a mixture of methamphetamine and hypertensive cardiovascular disease. His sister, Katherine Johnson, later reached a $12.75 million settlement with the city, the county and the jail's healthcare provider, Wellpath.
