Randal Alberto Gamboa-Esquivel
Randall Alberto Gamboa Esquivel, a 52-year-old Costa Rican man, worked as head of asphalt operations for local government, and his wife, Adriana Ureña, says he was very affectionate, adored his mother, and called relatives by video regularly. He was held in immigration detention in Texas, where his family says he was given antipsychotic medication, became drowsy and lost weight, and was hospitalized in June 2025, after which they lost contact with him until August. The family alleges negligence and inhumane treatment. He was flown to Costa Rica in September and died in a hospital there in late October 2025; Costa Rican doctors reportedly told his wife that brain damage, possibly from overmedication, may have been involved, but the cause has not been disclosed and is under investigation. The Department of Homeland Security says the death did not occur in ICE custody, that his care was better than many immigrants receive, and that he had been diagnosed with psychosis.
