Princess Anderson

died 2011 · Marshall County Jail, Marshall County, Mississippi

Princess Anderson was held in the Marshall County jail in Mississippi for three days in February 2011 while a commitment hearing was pending, after a hospital had begun commitment proceedings. According to her autopsy report, as described by ProPublica, she died a month later from multisystem organ failure of an unknown cause, after her condition worsened in the jail and staff did not respond to signs of medical distress. Her mother, Angela Anderson, went to the courthouse to ask that her daughter be taken to a hospital for an ultrasound and pressed for medical help while she was held. Her mother sued the sheriff, the county and the hospital, and according to later reporting a judge dismissed the county and sheriff as defendants and a jury found the hospital was not liable.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (neglect alleged). The medical examiner's autopsy attributes her death to multisystem organ failure of unknown cause, and her mother's lawsuit says jail staff did not respond to signs of her medical distress.

Reported by: Marshall County medical examiner (autopsy report) (medical examiner or coroner); her mother's lawsuit (family or their lawyers).

Lawsuit: Her mother sued the sheriff, the county and the hospital, and the suits did not result in any ruling holding anyone liable.
