Plummer Bullock
Plummer Bullock, a Black man, was held in the Warren County jail in Warrenton, North Carolina, in January 1921. In the night of January 23 to 24, a masked mob took him and another Black man from the jail and carried them into woods about a mile outside town, where they were shot to death. According to the Birmingham Age-Herald, the mob overpowered jailer John Green and took the keys. The sheriff said armed men had stopped him near the jail and that the mob was already inside, and accounts differ on the timing of the night's events. Governor Morrison ordered home guards out, but according to the Ocala Evening Star they arrived too late to prevent the killing.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A masked mob took Plummer Bullock from the Warren County jail, overpowered the jailer, took his keys and shot him in woods outside Warrenton, according to accounts from the period.
