Pie Hill
Pie Hill, a Black man held pretrial in the Marshall, Texas, jail, was taken from the jail by a mob in the early morning of April 30, 1909, and hanged, along with two other men held there. Newspaper accounts say militia had guarded the jail for several days and were withdrawn or relieved shortly before the mob formed, and that the crowd took the authorities by surprise. Pie Hill's family and life are not described in these accounts.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The Palestine Daily Herald reported that a mob marched on the Marshall jail about 2 a.m., took Pie Hill and two other men out and hanged them, after militia guarding the jail had been withdrawn.
