Pickard

died October 25, 1870 · Orange County Jail, Orange County, Indiana

Pickard was raised near Freedom in Green County, and his brother took charge of his body and brought it home there. He was being held at the Orange County jail when, the Cincinnati Commercial reported, constables and deputies taking him from Orleans toward the jail were stopped on October 25, 1870, at the Lost River bridge by a mob. That account says the mob took him and another man from the officers, pushed them over the bridge and hanged them, and a coroner's inquest found the deaths were at the hands of parties unknown. A New Albany Ledger account, reprinted in the Jasper Weekly Courier, says the guarding party was ordered away, the officers were overpowered, help returned too late, and the men were left hanging at each end of the bridge on a Tuesday night, and that Pickard told his captors that if they hanged him they would hang an innocent man.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A coroner's inquest found the death was at the hands of parties unknown, after a mob seized Pickard from officers taking him to the Orange County jail and hanged him from a bridge.

Reported by: Coroner's inquest (medical examiner or coroner); Cincinnati Commercial despatch (reporters); Bloomington correspondent (reporters); New Albany Ledger reprint (reporters).
