Phillip Antwon Munroe
Phillip Antwon Munroe was held at the Gwinnett County Jail in Georgia, where his family says his mental illness worsened and he stopped eating. His mother, Maureen Chesnut, said she called just about everyone she could think of for help, and his father, Ronald Chesnut, said the family only wants answers. The family says he weighed over 200 pounds at intake and 130 pounds at death, and the medical examiner listed starvation as the cause of death. He was found unresponsive in his cell on the maximum-security floor in January 2025, and the sheriff's office has not said how he died while the GBI investigates.
Cause of death, as reported: Died from neglect by staff. The medical examiner listed starvation as the cause of death, and his family says his mental illness worsened in jail and he stopped eating while the jail returned him from behavioral health facilities instead of keeping him in treatment.
Reported by: medical examiner or coroner; his family.
Lawsuit: His family plans a wrongful death lawsuit over his death at the Gwinnett County jail, and no settlement or award has been reported.
