Philip Markoff

24 years old · died August 15, 2010 · Suffolk County Jail at Nashua Street, Suffolk County, Massachusetts

Philip Markoff, 24, was a former Boston University medical student; friends described him as a model student, and his fiancée said he was a beautiful person inside and out. He was found dead in his cell at the Nashua Street Jail in Boston on the morning of Sunday, August 15, 2010, and was pronounced dead shortly after 10 a.m. The Suffolk County district attorney's office said the evidence collected so far indicates he took his own life and that surveillance video showed no one entered his cell overnight. The Boston Herald, citing anonymous sources, reported that he was not checked on during the entire night, and a Boston city councilor asked for an independent probe into how he was able to take his own life. His parents, Susan Haynes and Richard Markoff, said through his attorney that they loved him very much and supported him.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said the evidence indicates suicide, while a city councilor called for an independent probe, saying the Suffolk County Sheriff's office failed to provide appropriate care and custody, and the Boston Herald reported through anonymous sources that no one checked on him for the entire night.

Reported by: Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley (outside investigators); Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis (outside investigators); Boston Herald (reporters).
