Philip Garcia
Philip Garcia died on October 29, 2022, while held at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln. Lancaster County Attorney Pat Condon said his cellmate killed him, and a county grand jury returned an indictment that prosecutors announced in May 2024. The Nebraska State Patrol, the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office and the Lincoln Police Department are involved in the investigation, which is ongoing. A November 2024 report by the state inspector general, which described the death as a man found dead of asphyxia from a ligature with the manner undetermined, found that staff followed policy and urged an end to double-bunking in restrictive housing.
