Phil Slater
Phil Slater, a Black man about 50 years old, was held in the Monticello jail in Arkansas. On the night of March 22, 1921, the sheriff and several deputies were driving him toward Pine Bluff when a crowd of about 1,000 people stopped them and forced them back to Monticello. According to the Associated Press, the mob broke into the jail, the sheriff surrendered him, and the mob hanged him from a telegraph cable and shot his body. One account says he asked for a trial before he died. Other papers say he was hanged from a telephone pole rather than a telegraph cable.
