Peter Shanley
Peter Shanley, 68, of Dumont, was a longtime public works employee, and another prisoner remembered him as a regular guy who was always smiling. He was held at New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, and the state Department of Corrections website lists his date out of custody as April 7, 2020. Prisoners told The Trentonian that he had been sick for weeks, was shaking and barely responsive in his cell, and was taken to the hospital that day. They said he was not tested for COVID-19 before his death, and as of April 14, 2020, the cause of his death had not been released by the state.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (neglect alleged). Four prisoners told The Trentonian that Shanley had been sick for weeks and was not tested for COVID-19 before his death, which points to a failure to test and treat him, though no official cause has been released.
Reported by: Four prisoners quoted by The Trentonian (witnesses); New Jersey Department of Corrections (the agency that held him).
