Perry
Jules Perry, a Black man, was in custody in Ocoee, Florida, near Orlando, in the early hours of November 3, 1920. One account says a mob took him from a jail there, and another says he was taken from the officers holding him. A mob then hanged him from a tree outside Orlando and riddled his body with bullets. Election officials had earlier refused him a vote over an unpaid poll tax on election day.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). Accounts say a mob took Perry from a jail or from officers holding him early on November 3, 1920, and hanged him from a tree outside Orlando; election officials said he opened fire on white men after being refused a vote, which the lynching account does not dispute as a cause of death.
Reported by: Election officials; Omaha Daily Bee (accounts received in Orlando) (reporters); Associated Press (reporters).
