Pernell Harris
Pernell Harris was a Coffee County, Georgia man. His father spoke of him simply as his son and said the family was heartbroken, and family and friends marched to the courthouse to bring attention to his case. After an August 2021 encounter with deputies and police officers at a home in Douglas, he was taken to the Coffee County Jail, where one report says he became distressed. His family says he never regained consciousness after being brought to the jail, and he was hospitalized in intensive care for months before being moved to a long-term care facility in Twiggs County, where he died on August 23, 2022. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating his death, and the family and the NAACP are demanding answers about what happened between his arrest and his hospitalization.
