Died in jail or a lockup
Paul Holytrack
Paul Holytrack, a Native American man, was held in the Emmons County jail at Williamsport, North Dakota, when a masked mob broke into the jail on the night of November 13, 1897. Accounts say the mob forced the deputy sheriff to unlock the cells, took him from his bed, and hanged him from a beef windlass in the jail yard, where his body was left hanging through the day. One report says he was barely conscious from being dragged before the rope was placed. Accounts differ on whether jail staff resisted the mob or handed over the prisoners.
