Paul Edwin Schmidt, 55, collapsed on the floor of a holding cell at the Bi State Jail in Bowie County, Texas, after his bond was set on May 20, 2021, according to the Bowie County Sheriff's Office. He died at a local hospital around 4 a.m. on May 21, and the sheriff's office said an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death. The sheriff's office said deputies had learned he was assaulted at a hotel days earlier. The Texas Attorney General's custodial death report lists his death at the Bowie County Jail.
