Paul Augustus Howell

48 years old · died February 26, 2014 · Florida State Prison, Bradford County, Florida

Paul was a man whose attorney said he had undergone a spiritual transformation into a deep Christian faith, and while held at Florida State Prison he wrote scrolls of God's word and met with a Catholic spiritual adviser. His wife and grown daughter visited him earlier in the week, and he asked that they not attend his execution; his demeanor was described as calm. The State of Florida executed him by lethal injection on February 26, 2014, and the Florida Department of Corrections said he was pronounced dead at 6:32 p.m. His attorneys said the sedative midazolam, part of the state's new three-drug protocol, would not fully render him unconscious and that he showed signs of consciousness, while state attorneys argued that the consciousness checks ensure a condemned man is fully anesthetized.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. His attorneys said the midazolam in the state's new three-drug protocol would not fully render him unconscious.

Reported by: Florida Department of Corrections, via spokeswoman Jessica Cary (the agency that held him). The only account of how this person died comes from the agency that held him.
