Patrick Robert Smith, 40, of San Rafael, died at the Martinez Detention Facility in Contra Costa County, California, on June 25, 2026, one day after he was booked into the jail. According to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office, a deputy found him unresponsive in a room in the intake area around 9:06 a.m. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the facility. No cause of death has been released, and the Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office are investigating under the county's fatal incident protocol.
