Parson Wallace
Parson Wallace, a Black preacher, was held in the Greenwood, Mississippi, jail in March 1910 after a gunfight with a policeman in which both men were wounded. On March 9, a mob broke into the jail, took him from custody and strung him up from a telegraph pole in the center of town, where the Palestine Daily Herald reported he was still alive. Newspapers said a sheriff's statement that he would probably die held the crowd back for a time, until word spread that he might recover, and that a death watch had been kept on him at the jail overnight.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob broke into the Greenwood county jail, took Parson Wallace from the officers and hanged him from a telegraph pole.
Reported by: Herald Special (Palestine Daily Herald) (reporters).
