Ozias McGahey

died November 29, 1895 · Fayetteville jail, Lincoln County, Tennessee

Ozias McGahey, a Black man, was being moved by train under the custody of Sheriff Menefee when a crowd stopped the train at Fayetteville, Tennessee, and demanded the prisoners. The sheriff refused and had the prisoners placed in the Fayetteville jail, and he telegraphed the governor for state troops. On the night of November 29, 1895, armed men broke down four doors of the jail, took Ozias McGahey out and hanged him in the courthouse yard. Accounts differ on the size of the mob and on whether the troops arrived too late.
