Otto Warmbier

22 years old · died June 19, 2017 · Hamilton County, Ohio

Otto Warmbier was a 22-year-old University of Virginia student, and his parents said he was surrounded by his loving family when he died. He had been held in North Korea for nearly 17 months and was medically evacuated to Cincinnati in a coma on June 13, 2017. He died on June 19, 2017, after treatment at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where treating doctors described cardiopulmonary arrest with extensive brain injury. North Korea said he had botulism and had been given a sleeping pill, but his doctors said they did not find those conditions, and the Hamilton County Coroner's Office, which examined his body externally at the family's request, has drawn no conclusions about the cause or manner of death.

Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined (disputed). North Korea claimed botulism and a sleeping pill caused his death, but doctors at University of Cincinnati Medical Center said they did not find either, and the treating physicians attributed his death to cardiopulmonary arrest with extensive brain injury.

Reported by: North Korean government (the agency that held him); treating physicians at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
