Oscar M. Garrett

died April 24, 1882 · Decatur County Jail, Decatur County, Indiana

Garrett was held in the county jail at Greensburg, Indiana, in April 1882. The jailer, William Toothman, said about fifty masked men forced their way into the jail in the early morning, seized him, and demanded the keys to Garrett's cell. Accounts differ on whether Toothman gave up the keys, with one saying he refused and another saying the men failed to get them after nearly choking him. The mob took Garrett from his cell and hanged him from a tree in front of the jail, and a coroner's jury found he died from mob violence at the hands of unknown persons. The Indianapolis Sentinel condemned the killing and called for those responsible to be arrested and brought to justice.
